What are TMJ Disorders?

TMJ disorders are painful conditions that occur in and around the jaw – where the Temporomandibular joint is located. TMJ disorders can impact speaking, eating, chewing, swallowing, and breathing.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Pain in the face, jaw joint, neck, back, and even the ear
  • Inability to open the mouth
  • Jaw noises – popping, clicking, or grinding
  • Headaches
  • Discomfort when biting or chewing
  • Facial swelling
  • Dizziness or trouble hearing
  • The jaw feeling stuck or “locked”

While minor, occasional jaw pain is not likely to be serious, a combination of symptoms can point to TMJ disorders.

TMJ symptoms can often be treated with over-the-counter pain medication, stretching exercises, and mouth guards. Sometimes more advanced treatments, like bite adjustments or splints, are required. Talk to your dentist if you are experiencing TMJ symptoms to determine the right course of treatment for you.
